Since releasing 2013's Bangerz, Miley Cyrus has been focusing her efforts on her new non-profit Happy Hippie Foundation, while also recording her new album with Flaming Lips' lead singer Wayne Coyne. And while we heard a sneak peek of her new sound via a 14-second Instagram clip back in March, we haven't heard much else, aside from various covers. But at the Adult Swim Upfronts party, she debuted her new song "Tiger Dreams"—and, without meaning to sound sycophantic, it's a beautiful, potent piece.
The poetic, slow burning track melds together both Coyne's psychedelic influences and Cyrus' country upbringings. The soft, heartwrenching song is certainly a far cry from the loud, in-your-face, Pharrell-produced Bangerz, but seems to align with Cyrus' recent progression as a performer. As of late, she's been incredibly honest, speaking about her previous relationships and being single, and has turned to serious musicmakers like Joan Jett for guidance.
Still, don't expect her to change: She also performed a cover of Khia's "My Neck, My Back" at the Upfronts bash. Just Miley being Miley.
