Watch Rooney Mara & Cate Blanchett Make Eyes In the ‘Carol’ Trailer

did someone say oscars?

by Ben Barna

One of the most talked-about films at last May's Cannes Film Festival was Todd Haynes' period romance, Carol. Part of the excitement stemmed from the sumptuous details of the '50s-set love story, but mainly it was for the tour de force performances from its leads, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, the latter who went on to win the festival's award for best actress.

The movie's gorgeous first trailer gives us a closer glimpse into the story of a married woman (the title character, played by Blanchett) who forms a romantic connection with a New York department-store clerk, played by Mara. We see Blanchett firmly in her comfort zone, as a deep-voiced, throwback seductress who oozes glamor, and Mara as a seemingly innocent woman whose facial expressions reveal more than words ever could. Both actresses are already considered locks for Oscar nominations, because duh. Carol opens on November 20.
