Last night, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg shocked and awed SXSW when they debuted a work-in-progress version of their new, R-rated animated comedy, Sausage Party. The tweet below sums up the general reaction:

To give the rest of us a taste of the comedic mayhem, that the audience in Austin witnessed, Rogen released the first red band trailer for this movie about a group of groceries who think being "chosen" by humans is their great purpose, only to realize that fate involves being chopped up, cooked, and devoured by those very same humans. The movie is a comedy, but watching an anthropomorphic potato get skinned alive in front of all his friends is some pretty horrific stuff.

The movie, which is at least six years in the making, involves a voice cast that includes Rogen's regular collaborators like Jonah Hill, James Franco, and Paul Rudd, as well as Kristen Wiig, Ed Norton, and Salma Hayek. It opens on August 12, which is when it will proceed to make many, many dollars. Watch the trailer, above.
