'Bombshell' Leads The 2020 SAG Awards Nominations

'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and 'Fleabag' topped the TV category

by Claire Valentine

Awards season is fully upon us. On Wednesday morning, the 2020 Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced, with Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the #MeToo drama Bombshell leading film nods. America Ferrera (Superstore) and Danai Gurira (Black Panther) revealed the 15 film and TV categories in a ceremony in West Hollywood.

Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie all received acting nods for their work on Bombshell, a dramatized look at the women of Roger Ailes-era Fox News. On the television front, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's cult hit Fleabag and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starring Rachel Brosnahan dominated with three and four nods, respectively. Though conversations around diversity in awards shows have reached the mainstream since #OscarsSoWhite first went viral, it's still proving to be an uphill battle. No actresses of color were nominated in the television space for a SAG award this year.

Keep an eye out for SAG wins if you want an idea of who might be in the running to take home Oscars later in the year, especially when it comes to Ensemble awards (last year, Black Panther got a Best Picture Oscar nom after winning for Best Ensemble). It's not a direct correlation, but a good barometer of where voters' heads are at. The awards ceremony will air on TNT and TBS on January 19.
