Go Behind The Scenes Of The Largest New York Fashion Week Runway Event Celebrating Queer Style

dapperQ’s fourth NYFW show featured over 65 LGBTQ models + 10 designers

It’s no secret that dapperQ constantly finds ways to dismantle gender binaries and challenge the status quo by embracing, honoring, and cultivating queer style. And for their fourth New York Fashion Week show, the leading style website for masculine women and trans-identified individuals partnered with Brooklyn Museum and associate producers Colette Lee Productions to present R/Evolution—a show highlighting 10 designers whose work is rooted in notions of gender nonconformity and its intersections with race, ethnicity, and culture.

The show featured over 65 LGBTQ models, including ), Ericka Hart (activist and cancer warriorBenjamin Melzer (the first transgender man in the world to make the cover of Men’s Health Magazine), Loiza Lamers (the first transgender contestant to win Next Top Model), B. Hawk Snipes (fashion influencer featured in Vogue), Rain Dove (androgynous model who is the face of a Dove campaign and has been featured in Vogue, Huffington Post, and Refinery29), Alysse Dalessandro (body activist), and Juliet Evancho (trans teen who was successful in dismantling her school’s discriminatory bathroom policy).

NYLON’s global editor-in-chief Gabrielle Korn caught up with some of show’s prominent guests and models, including dapperQ owner Anita Dolce Vita, to find how this season’s show focused on queer style as a means of resistance.

“What I really love about queer styles is that it really dismantles binaries,” Vita says. “This year’s show feels more important than ever. Over the last eight months, we have seen attacks against our LGBTQ communities and the various intersections in which we exist increase by direct orders from the Trump administration or the indirect normalization of bigotry resulting from the Trump administration’s rhetoric ... R/Evolution is an act of defiance. It is our space to stay visible in the face of attempts at erasure. It is in honor of all efforts of resisting, to the activists being arrested in protest to the individuals whose impactful act of resisting is smashing the binary by getting up, getting dressed, and just existing!”
