A new era is upon us. It’s one where Ariana Grande is platinum blonde and rocks a low ponytail rather than a high one. She can sit sideways and hang on the side of ladders. She throws whole cities upside. She scales the sides of buildings in eight-inch heels (just kidding she could probably always do that). Grande is back and she has “No Tears Left To Cry.”
The singer’s latest single is her first new music since 2016’s Dangerous Woman. In that time, she’s undergone a lot. Most notably, the tragic experience of a terrorist attack at her concert in Manchester, England, at which 22 people were killed. Instead of breaking down or withdrawing after that, Grande built herself and her fans back up, emerging as the pop star we all need but don’t, necessarily, deserve. “No Tears Left To Cry” appears to be Grande’s way of letting us how she’s doing. “Ain’t got no tears left to cry,” she declares on the bop. “So I’m pickin’ it up, pickin’ it up/ I’m lovin’, I’m livin’, I’m pickin’ it up.”
The Bladerunner-reminiscent visuals are just as hopeful and positive and vibrant as the lyrics. Despite everything she’s been through in the past year, Grande has returned even more powerful than before. If you’re not willing to come onboard, then move aside because, as Grande declares: "We're way too fly to partake in all this hate/ We're out here vibing."
