Balenciaga Names Rihanna’s Fave Hoodie Designer As Creative Director

The end of Alexander Wang’s reign over Balenciaga ended this week. Now, the noted head designer of very expensive hoodies is taking over.

Demna Gvasalia of Vetements fame will pick up where Wang left off. “I am very pleased to welcome Demna Gvasalia as the artistic director of Balenciaga’s collections,” Isabelle Guichot, the CEO and president of Balenciaga said in a statement. “He has quickly emerged as the best choice for the new artistic direction of the maison. With his mastery of techniques, his expertise and fashion knowledge, in conjunction with his innovative and carefully considered approach, Demna Gvasalia adopts a unique vision of the designer’s role today and thus recalls Cristobal Balenciaga’s own vision.” Expect oversized sleeves and architectural, slouchy takes on the house’s avant-garde approach to luxury. Oh, and expect to see Rihanna sporting it, too. She and Kanye West are major fans of Vetements.

Guichot added, “I am confident that he will succeed in embracing Balenciaga’s core values and developing them in harmony with today’s global changes.” Félicitations, monsieur!
