Our Favorite Beauty Looks From Tonight’s VMAs

Tip: match your eyeshadow to your dress

Tonight, we tuned into the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards for quite a few reasons. Okay, maybe just to catch Taylor Swift’s much talked about, new music video. With that said, we were pleasantly surprised with the beauty inspiration we saw on the blue carpet.

If there’s one thing that’s clear, it’s that overdone, caked-on red carpet makeup is definitely on its way out, with more subtle looks (still, with a healthy dose of color) taking over. Tonight, we saw everything from soft washes of pastels a la Lorde to sparkling red liquid liner via Vanessa Hudgens. Both choices are as glamorous for an awards show as they are simple enough to be worn every day.

Even more captivating than the makeup was the hair. From Demi Lovato’s beachy mane to Yara Shahidi’s vintage-style finger waves, we certainly feel an urgency to bust out our curling irons, stat. Even Amber Rose traded in her signature bleached buzz cut for long, sweeping brunette locks that she paired with a vampy berry lip.

The biggest trend of the evening, though? Matching your makeup to your dress, which, you know, actually worked. Shahidi, Hudgens, and Jessica Sula all proved that sometimes your lids and lips should match your getup.

Ahead, our favorite beauty looks of the evening.

This may be the first time we’ve seen Amber Rose without her signature bleached buzz cut in quite some time, and we must say, her long brunette ‘do looks oh so elegant.
