Watch The Trailer For ‘Phantom Thread,’ Featuring Daniel Day-Lewis’ Final Performance

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

A Paul Thomas Anderson movie is a big deal. A Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Daniel Day-Lewis is an even bigger deal. The last time these two geniuses collaborated was on There Will Be Blood, and the movie is now considered a classic, featuring a performance that won Day-Lewis his second Oscar. So, there was always reason to be excited for the upcoming Phantom Thread. But a few months ago, when Day-Lewis announced his performance in the film would be his last, the project was shouldered with mythic expectations. And finally, with today’s release of the official trailer, we get to see what all the fuss is about.

In it, we see Day-Lewis as an elegant dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock in '50s-era London, clothing people at the upper echelon of British society. His life changes when he meets and falls in love with a young waitress, played by newcomer Vicky Krieps. Based on the trailer, their turbulent relationship will be at the heart of what looks like a beautifully crafted film—and an automatic Oscar contender. Watch the trailer, above, and check out Phantom Thread when it hits theaters on Christmas.
