31 Days of DIY Denim: Day 26, Elbow Patches

Check out today’s project

NYLON

staffers created unique, DIY projects using denim in honor of our annual Denim Issue. Check back here every day of August to see a new project.

What you'll need:

Measuring tape

A denim jacket

Lots of studs

Premade denim patch in the same shade as the jacket (optional)

Chalk

*Note: This is the most comfortable way to attach the studded patches since the bottom of the studs have a second layer of denim between you and your skin. If you're into sewing, go for it. If you're into living on the edge, forget the premade patch and attach them straight to the sleeve.

Directions (Without the premade patch):

Step 1: Take a measuring tape and measure the length from the outside of your shoulder to the middle of your elbow, marking the distance on your right jacket sleeve with chalk and then marking a point two inches above that.

Step 2: Repeat, measuring your left side.

Step 3: Lay your jacket down on a flat surface so that the back is facing the ceiling. The back of the sleeves should also be facing up.

Step 4: Use the size of your studs to map out the size of the patch on your sleeve, beginning at the second, higher point you drew, and extending it two inches past your elbow's midpoint. You can make the patch area as wide as you want.

Step 5: Once you're satisfied with the look and shape of the patch, start securing the studs near the top and working your way down, allowing the shape and size of the studs to guide you. (Be careful not to prick yourself when you push the prongs through and fold them over.)

Step 6: Rub out the chalk marks.

Step 7: Repeat steps four to six on the opposite sleeve.

Step 8: Put the jacket on and look really cool.

Directions using a premade (and matching!) denim patch:

Step 1: Take a measuring tape and measure the length from the outside of your shoulder to the middle of your elbow, marking the distance on your right jacket sleeve with chalk and then marking a point two inches above that.

Step 2: Repeat, measuring your left side.

Step 3: Begin to apply studs to the patch until the whole surface is covered.

Step 4: Sew the newly studded patch onto your jacket sleeve, making sure the top of the patch aligns with the point drawn above the midpoint.

Step 5: Rub out the chalk marks.

Step 6: Repeat steps three to five.

Step 7: Put it on and look really cool.
