instagram has blocked #curvy

well, this is questionable

Instagram has just made an audacious decision to make the term "curvy" unsearchable. While "curvy" is normally a term one would associate with plus-sized women and body positivity, Instagram explains that the move to block this word has to do solely with their nudity policy.

A spokesperson for Instagram told Mashable, "I can confirm that we did block the hashtag #curvy. It was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity. Please note that the block has nothing to do with the term 'curvy' itself." But we can't help but question why words such as "vagina," "boobs," and "body," as well as sexual terms, are still searchable. Also, while you can't search for simply #curvy, you can search #curvygirl or #curvywomen.

This decision has obviously gained the attention of the plus-size world, specifically the editor-in-chief of Plus Model Magazine, Madeline Jones, who said, "Instagram has decided to suppress the hashtag #Curvy, as porn companies were using it. While many questionable hashtags are still searchable, we wonder about the logic of this bold move."

Earlier this year, Instagram spoke to Huffington Post, about their confusing nudity policy, which has been called into question many times. "We try hard to find a good balance between allowing people to express themselves creatively and having policies in place to maintain a comfortable experience for our global and culturally diverse community," they said. "This is one reason why our guidelines put limitations on nudity, but we recognize that we don’t always get it right."

We're not so sure you got this one right, Instagram.
