Janelle Monáe Brought Queer Pride To The BET Awards

You haven’t seen rainbow until you’ve seen this dress

Pansexual goddess and queer icon Janelle Monáe celebrated Pride at Sunday’s 2018 BET Awards in a rainbow skirted gown by Nicolas Jebran.

The singer showed off her ensemble on the red carpet and accented it with a rainbow crystal-studded clutch and beautiful Tiffany & Co. jewels. Her celebratory gown was topped off with a black conductor hat, fitting seeing as she’s often at the forefront of LGBTQ advocacy and awareness.

Naturally, Twitter was set ablaze with admiration and praise for the look.

Monáe consistently uses her platform for conversations that need to be had. In a Rolling Stone interview from this past April, she came out as pansexual saying, "Being a queer black woman in America, someone who has been in relationships with both men and women—I consider myself to be a free-ass motherf*cker.”

That freedom often materializes in the form of iconic, eye-catching fashion that unapologetically pushes boundaries. You might remember the looks in her “Pynk” video, where she gifted the world with “vagina pants” and explored and celebrated female sexuality. The BET awards acted as the perfect place to continue her crusade for intersectional identity politics.

Monáe doesn't ask for an audience, she demands one—and it’s honestly the refreshing representation we all need. Check out her full look below.
