Kesha Is Back With A Soulful New Single And Video

She’s just getting started

by Taylor Bryant

Kesha is ready for a new beginning, as evidenced in her Instagram post yesterday. Now, today, we get a glimpse of what this new chapter in the singer's life consists of.

From the looks of her new video for "Praying," it involves lots of forgiveness, introspection, and newly found strength. "Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell," she belts out on the soulful track. "I had to learn how to fight for myself/ And we both know all the truth I could tell/ I'll just say this is I wish you farewell."

Co-written by Ryan Lewis, this is Kesha's first release in almost four years due to her legal battle with Dr. Luke, which barred her from releasing any new music. The singer also wrote a piece for Lenny Letter tied to "Praying," in which she talks about finding strength from her darkest moments and also about the inspiration behind the single. "This song is about coming to feel empathy for someone else even if they hurt you or scare you," she writes. And while Kesha never mentions Dr. Luke directly (in either the letter nor the song), people are bound to assume that's the someone to whom Kesha is referring.

Kesha also reveals that "Praying" is just a glimpse of what's to come. She notes that her upcoming record, Rainbow, is all about telling the truth about her life. "This album is me. The most raw and real art I have ever created, and now it's my gift to you," she writes. It's set to come out August 11 and will feature appearances from Dolly Parton, song writing help from Kesha's mother, Pebe Sebert, and production from Ben Folds.
