According to the rumor mill, Lady Gaga is reportedly being eyed to play Ursula in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. However, her rumored top spot on the casting list has already sparked significant backlash.

Though we all know Gaga is immensely talented, many online are arguing that Ursula—"a fat girl icon"—shouldn't be played by her. As Amanda Richards wrote for InStyle, Ursula meant a lot to her growing up as "she wasn’t the meek, shrinking violet, hide in the corner with a cardigan on kind of fat, either—she was glamorous, she was sexy, and she did not give a single solitary fuck." As such, it would be a disservice to take that role away from a plus-size actor.

Others, such as Madame Noire's Veronica Wells, said that Ursula should be played by a black woman, as it could be argued that many of Ursula's mannerisms are taken from black lexicon and culture—from her "her raspy voice, that 'innit,' [and] her curves."

However, as Nerdist clarified, this is just a rumor. According to them, official casting hasn't even begun. If that's true, there's plenty of time for Disney to consider a more diverse range of actors.
