Lana Del Rey And The Weeknd Get Cozy In The “Lust For Life” Video

Atop the Hollywood sign

by Taylor Bryant

We still don’t have a release date for Lana Del Rey’s forthcoming album, but we do finally have a video for the titular track, “Lust For Life.” So, we’re getting… somewhere.

In the visuals, we first encounter the singer performing some demure choreography before running off to climb the Hollywood signs’ letter H, a move we might’ve seen coming given the first line of the song: “Climb up the H of the Hollywood sign, yeah/ In these stolen moments/ The world is mine.” The Weeknd is waiting for her once she gets to the top, and the two proceed to act adorably couple-like through a filtered retro haze.

The climax of the video comes when the pair runs across the other letters in a daring (but romantic??) move, finally sliding off the D into a field of flowers. As Genius pointed out when the track first dropped, it’s possible that the lines in the song (and, even more so, the video) reference the suicide of young actor Peg Entwistle who killed herself in 1932 by jumping off the Hollywood signs’ H. It’s rumored that her ghost has haunted the landmark ever since.

This backstory would explain the dreamlike air of the video, but we can’t know for sure where Del Rey’s creative heart lies on this one. Watch the lusty video above and, before you start prodding Del Rey about the whereabouts of the album, think before you troll.
