Michelle Williams Shares She Sought Mental Health Treatment
“If you change your mind, you can change your life”
Former Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams revealed that she recently sought help for mental health issues.
“For years I have dedicated myself to increasing awareness of mental health and empowering people to recognize when it’s time to seek help, support and guidance from those that love and care for your wellbeing,” she wrote on Twitter. “I recently listened to the same advice I have given to thousands around the world and sought help from a great team of healthcare professionals.”
Williams opened up about being depressed and having suicidal thoughts while in Destiny’s Child last year and said that she’s dealt with mental health issues since she was 13. “I didn’t know until I was in my 30s what was going on; I thought it was growing pains,” she said while on The Talk. “I just thought, ‘I’m just turning into a woman,’ so I’ve been suffering since between the age of 13 to 15.” Today, she writes, she’s able to “proudly, happily and healthily stand here as someone who will continue to always lead by example as I tirelessly advocate for the betterment of those in need.”
Mental health often goes undiscussed, especially in the black community. We’re glad to see more and more celebrities breaking down the stigma associated with it and starting these types of dialogues. As Williams concludes: “If you change your mind, you can change your life.”
