Jaden Smith Makes His Anime Debut In ‘Neo Yokio’ Trailer
The voice cast also includes Jude Law, Alexa Chung, Tavi Gevinson, and more
We shouldn’t, really, be surprised that Jaden Smith is going to star in an anime series on Netflix. The 19-year-old is a modern-day renaissance man. And yet, here we are, surprised at the fact that Jaden Smith is going to star in an anime series on Netflix.
Not just any series, either. Because we wouldn’t expect a project Smith is involved in to be basic by any means. Neo Yokio, produced by Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend, pays “homage to classic anime, English literature, and modern New York fashion and culture.”
“Neo Yokio is the greatest city in the world,” the trailer opens. “It is a diverse labyrinth of cultural and architectural innovation. Of course, whenever a city becomes the envy of the world, problems are bound to arise.”
Smith is supposed to help solve the city’s problem. He will play Kaz Kaaan, a pink-haired “magistocrat” member who is really good at demon slaying but would rather channel his energy toward shopping, field hockey, and healing his broken heart. Yep, sounds about right.
Smith will also be joined by an impressive gang of voice talent that includes Susan Sarandon, Jude Law, Tavi Gevinson, Alexa Chung, Jason Schwartzman, The Kid Mero, Desus Nice, and others.
We want to be wherever Neo Yokio is. The series hits the streaming service September 22.
