Here at NYLON, we get just as excited about a new designer drop as we do about a beloved childhood reboot. When it comes to collaborations, we thought we'd seen it all, but nothing could have prepared us for the next-levelness of being approached to work together by the originator of all things kawaii, Sanrio. One visit to their epic L.A. headquarters and we were transported to those far-off days when we felt back-to-school unstoppable with freshly sharpened Pochacco pencils and Keroppi erasers.
Longtime aficionado and senior fashion market editor Marissa Smith teamed up with Sanrio to design a nine-piece collection that celebrates classic characters like Hello Kitty, Little Twin Stars, and Badtz-Maru, as well as newcomer lazy egg Gudetama. Highlights from the collab include the '70s-inspired Hello Kitty bomber jacket and athleisure shorts combo and Gudetama bodysuit. Styling tip: Mix and match the two-piece sets for a head-to-toe look or wear them separately with your favorite distressed denim pieces.
When it came time to bring the collection to life for our June/July issue, photo director Sonia Ostrovsky was able to procure a Hello Kitty-themed moon bounce (yes, they exist)—and a studio large enough to fit one in. The ride-or-die models (and a few editors in between takes) jumped and caught oversize plushies to their heart's content. Tough day of shooting.
