6 Fresh Ways To Wear Plaid This Fall

The season’s most beloved print is back, and it’s better than ever

by Jenna Igneri

Fall and plaid go hand in hand, and it seems as if the print—whether in its most basic form or as a tartan, a check, or a gingham—comes back annually as a seasonal go-to.

As can be expected then, plaid's presence is once again felt this fall. Making its way to the runways of Calvin Klein (via Raf Simons), Prada, Tibi, and many more, this season we see plaid in the form of pantsuits, trousers, and trenches, and a number of fitted separates. Overall, it's much more polished and colorful than the grunge we've seen in seasons past—but that doesn't mean it has to be prim and proper.

However polished plaid may be, the question remains: How can we keep things interesting? By mixing and matching different variations of the print, of course! Or by pairing it with bold and bright statement pieces and accessories. Or even by simply wearing it in new and unique silhouettes.

Below, check out six fresh ways to style your plaid this fall.

Pair a full-on look—such as a calf-length plaid jacket—with accessories that pop, such as a white boot and quirky, bold earrings.

Keep things interesting by adding a pop of red to a typical black-and-white gingham print, whether with shoes, lip, or both.

Plaid can shake up an otherwise sporty look. Throw on an oversized jacket or flannel with an athletic mock-neck top, and voila—you have a grungy athleisure look.

A plaid suit feeling a bit too business-y for you? Throw on a neon faux fur and be on your way.

Don't be afraid to mix and match your plaids, no matter how different the prints and colors may be.

If mixing and matching isn't your forte, start small: Mix two different prints similar in color for a subtly contrasting look.
