Relive Pride Month With These Incredible Photos From San Francisco’s Celebrations

Still giving ‘em hope

Harvey Milk, the activist and first openly gay politician to be elected to public office in California, once said, "You have to give them hope." His message was simple: Inspire a space for the LGBTQ and other marginalized communities to dream and see the possibility of a bright future. Milk said these words in 1977, eight years after the Stonewall Riots in New York City, but still the beginning of the Queer Rights Movement, a time of burgeoning hope and pride, which is now celebrated every June with marches and parades for Pride Month.

Milk was a politician in San Francisco, a queer mecca in America. Like Pride in NYC, San Francisco Pride is a pillar of Pride Month celebrations. It's bursting with vitality and the same activist energy that Milk helped encourage. Photographer Lindsey Byrnes was there, on the ground, taking it all in and memorializing it all on in the images below. From the Academy of Arts to the Dyke March, the Civic Center, and Wild Things party, relive this year's celebrations in living, (virtually) breathing color. Hope is alive, friends. Pride lives on.
