The New ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ Looks A Lot Like The Old ‘She’s Gotta Have It’
Netflix just dropped the trailer for their latest series
Spike Lee’s debut movie She’s Gotta Have It is being transformed from film to a Netflix television series more than 30 years after its release. In the brand new trailer, we’re introduced to the modern day Nola Darling, played by DeWanda Wise (who we spotlighted last month), a “sex positive, polyamorous pansexual.” Like the movie, this Darling has three different lovers: former model Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), banker Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent), and sneakerhead Mars Blackmon (originally played by Lee, now played by Anthony Ramos). The series will follow our protagonist as she navigates her lovers, friends, and life as an artist.
It’s hard to decipher from the clip what aspects of the show will deviate from the film. As of now, it looks like a lot of things are staying the same, from the plot down to Darling’s candle-dotted headboard. One thing that will differ is that the Netflix production likely has a bigger budget. The 1985 version was filmed over 12 days and took only $175,000 to produce. Also, it was in black and white.
We also won’t have to witness what Lee has since admitted to being a “vile” rape scene that took place in the original. He told Deadline back in 2014 that it’s his one professional regret. “It was just totally…stupid,” he said. “I was immature. It made light of rape, and that’s the one thing I would take back.” Darling was a progressive character in a lot of ways so, big changes or not, it will be interesting to check in on her and the others three decades later.
The 10-episode series will drop on Netflix this Thanksgiving.
