Go Inside The Rehearsal Room Of The Upcoming ‘Step’ Documentary

“We’re taking it to the next level, right?”

The documentary Step profiles a group of high school senior girls in Baltimore and their step dance group. It takes place during a particularly tense time in the city—following the death of Freddie Gray and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement—and follows these young women as they gear up to compete in the Bowie State step competition.

The act of stepping is dynamic when executed correctly. It’s demanding on a physical and emotional level; it also involves a lot of teamwork and a whole lot of practice. In this exclusive, we get a glimpse of what, exactly, goes on off the stage and inside the rehearsals and practice. “I want them to understand that this is way bigger than step,” step coach Gary McIntyre explains.

Step explores what happens when the students learn how to hit their marks, get out of their heads, and gain confidence in their abilities. It’s about seeing what can be done with a little determination and support backing you up.

The film opens in select theaters August 4. Watch the full featurette above.
