Taylor Swift Wins Groping Case Against DJ David Mueller
She fought for “anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault”
Taylor Swift has won her civil trial against former radio host DJ David Mueller, who groped her during a meet-and-greet in 2013, The New York Times reports. She was awarded the $1 in damages she'd requested. Her lawyer, Douglas Baldridge, said the money's symbolic value is "immeasurable to all women."
Swift also announced after her win that she'll be making donations to sexual assault victims. After thanking her attorneys for "fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault," the singer said, “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard.”
During the trial, Swift was careful not to mince words. When asked if she was critical of her bodyguard for not stepping in when Mueller groped her, Swift said, “I am critical of your client for sticking his hand under my skirt and grabbing my ass." And when asked why, in a photo of the incident, her skirt wasn't askew in the front, Swift replied, “Because my ass is located in the back of my body.”
Mueller's $3 million lawsuit against Swift, alleging he lost his job over her false claims that he touched her inappropriately, was thrown out on Friday after the judge said there wasn't sufficient evidence to suggest Swift was lying.
