See Dakota Fanning Hunt Down A 19th-Century Serial Killer In ‘The Alienist’ Trailer

It gets creepy

The first preview of TNT’s new series The Alienist, based on the novel of the same name, was released in May, but the most recent trailer is here, and it offers up even more shots of Dakota Fanning in 19th-century fashion. Oh, and blood. There's lots of that, too.

Fanning plays Sara Howard, a police secretary who wants to be New York City’s first female detective—and won’t take no for an answer. She stars alongside The Alienist himself, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, played by Daniel Brühl. Luke Evans, who you might recognize as hunky Gaston from the live-action Beauty and the Beast, is a newspaper illustrator who also takes part in the investigation. After the gruesome murders of several prostitutes, the threesome hopes to hunt down one of the city’s first serial killers using a combination of science and psychology.

“Instead of looking to cure a disease of the body, I look to help those who are suffering from an illness of the mind,” Kreizler says. “Our task is to construct an image of the man—his habits, his appetites—and thereby capture him.” This makes for one creepy murder mystery.

The series premieres January 22.
