‘The Assassination Of Gianni Versace’ Trailer Was Worth The Wait

Penelope Cruz as Donatella though

Eerie, ominous, sinister—these are all words that we’ve used to describe the few glimpses of The Assassination of Gianni Versace we’ve seen in the past few months. With the teasers behind us, and the trailer now in front of us, we finally have a better idea of what we can expect from this show: ‘90s opulence, blood, and really great acting.

Ryan Murphy’s next iteration of American Crime Story is one of the most anticipated shows right now. How does one follow up nine Emmy’s and two Golden Globes? By enlisting Penelope Cruz to play a spot-on Donatella Versace, Edgar Ramirez as the titular fashion designer, and Ricky Martin as Gianni’s partner. Oh, and by pegging it to the 20th-anniversary of the actual crime.

The trailer focuses mostly on Andrew Cunanan, played by Darren Criss, a narcissistic serial killer who murdered Gianni on the steps of his villa in 1997. It follows him through Chicago, Los Angeles, and finally Miami, where he commits his fifth and final crime. Cunanan committed suicide eight days after killing Gianni. “This world is wasted on me,” Cunanan says in the clip. “Yet this world also made you, Mr. Versace, into a star. You’re not better than me; we’re the same. The only difference is that you got lucky.”

The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres January 17 on FX.
