With everything he’s got going on, it’s hard to imagine how James Franco found the time to star in a heavy-hitting new drama from HBO. But here he is, front and center, in the brand-new trailer for The Deuce, a new series from The Wire creator, David Simon, about the founding of the modern adult porn industry on the mean streets of ‘70-era New York, particularly Times Square. And because this is Franco, playing just one character isn’t enough. The tireless actor actually stars as twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, two hustlers—one is a bartender, the other a gambler—who get involved in the sex industry in ways that are still unclear, but that definitely have an impact. At one point in the trailer, one of the brothers tells his wife, played by Zoe Kazan, “I’m the center of things now. I’m building something.”
But don’t expect The Deuce to be about just selling sex. You can expect it to tackle an abundance of social issues, racial and gender dynamics and inequalities, and the failure of modern institutions. This is a David Simon series, after all. Besides starring two James Francos, The Deuce also features a solid lineup of actresses, including the aforementioned Kazan, Maggie Gyllenhaal as a sex worker-turned-entrepreneur, Emily Meade, and Margarita Levieva. The Deuce premieres on HBO on September 10, just around the time that other show of theirs is scheduled to wrap. Watch the trailer above.
