Labor Day weekend is just around the corner, and, according to one of the oldest rules in fashion, this means we’re supposed to stop wearing white overnight.
One of many dress codes created by the wealthiest women of the 1880s, the “no white after Labor Day” rule aimed to showcase the difference between women of old money and new. However, by the ‘50s, this “rule” trickled down from high society down to the middle class, with white clothing becoming a very seasonable trend that was only available between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Frankly, we think it’s a load of crap.
Of course, we’re not ones to follow the rules. We think white could (and should) be worn year-round, as do many of the most fashion-forward brands and biggest fashion tastemakers of today.
With that said, we rounded up 17 must-have white accessories for fall that you could (and again, should) wear from September through May. From fall-appropriate boots to statement bags, sunnies, and more, these accessories can be paired with both your transitional jackets and your cozy sweaters.
So go ahead—break the rules. Click through the gallery, below, to check out our favorites.
