5 Pro Tips On Experimenting With Metallic Hair Colors

Written by Lauren Hubbard

With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to bring your creativity out of hibernation and experiment with a new look for the season. Bold hair colors are hotter than ever so if you’ve been on the fence about a big change, it’s never been easier, or less intimidating—even for those with dark hair—to bail on boring and splash out with a color moment thanks to Göt2b Metallics. Just take it from TikTok star Wendy Ly, AKA @wendyskin who’s an expert at incorporating head turning shades into her style (and recently dyed her hair a gorgeous Urban Fuchsia shade that’s giving us serious hair envy). Ahead, her pro tips for the best ways to play around with high-impact hair color.

1. Don’t Be Afraid To Express Yourself

Choosing a statement hair color can give you an instant boost of confidence, as the way you look becomes a form of individualism you can display to the world—all without saying a word. “Some people like to get tattoos, draw, and own collections,” says Ly. “My way of self-expression is dying my hair.” She explains, “When my dad passed away at 17, I started dying my hair as a coping mechanism. I learned quickly that dying my hair brings me joy and confidence. It’s a way for me to express myself without talking.” Whether you’ve always been one to sport eye-catching looks or you’re looking to pump up the volume and show everyone your unique self, opting for a radiant shade is an instant way to say “I’ve arrived.”

2. Make A Change That Makes YOU Happy

Change can be scary for some, but brilliant hair color is all about making an impact, so lean into your most daring impulses and let them lead the way. “I’d like to think that I am a bold person and that translates to my hair color,” says Ly. “I actually have so many friends who always tell me that they want to be a little more adventurous with their hair color. However, once they sit on that salon chair, they quickly change their minds and settle for a slightly lighter shade of their natural hair color.” Rather than letting anxiety about what other people might think rule the day, let your big color decision be a take charge moment and make a choice that brings you joy—after all, it’s your look, it should reflect your unique self. Ly adds, “At the end of the day, you should do what makes you happy and having my hair colored makes me happy!”

3. Try A Color That’s Bold Enough For Everyone

Your natural hair color shouldn’t be a barrier to your self-expression. While some old school products relied on naturally light or bleached strands to deliver high impact shades at home, Göt2b Metallics has shades specifically geared toward darker hair, which used to be left out of the creative color game. They’re specially formulated with metallic shine boosters so the results are cool, shimmering tones with dimension. Its anti-fading effect helps you get a permanent color that truly lasts. With over a dozen shades—from eye-catching lavender, to moody true red, to sleek, chic silver—there’s something for every taste, no matter your hair type.

4. Match Your Shade To The Season

Ready to take the plunge but not sure where to start? Ly’s rule of thumb for choosing the perfect color looks toward nature for inspiration. “I base my hair colors on the seasons. If it’s light, then it’ll be silver which is very suitable for the colder months. In the spring/summer is when I like to express myself with adventurous hair colors such as the one on my hair right now,” she says of her current Göt2b Metallics Urban Fuschia ‘do. “I love how the Metallics line is filled with BOLD colors! I already bought the color “Sakura Pink”. I think that will be my next hair color! I love how you can achieve such a bold metallic color without going to the salon!

5. Keep These Pointers In Mind With At-Home Hair Dye

When it comes to having the best experience crafting your bold new look, Ly has a few simple bits of advice. First, “Always read the directions!” Knowing where you’re going will keep your nerves in check and help make your finished look perfectly polished. "Another tip I love is using cold water when rinsing out the dye. It helps to seal up the cuticle and lock in your color!" And finally, don’t second guess yourself. “The dye will be much lighter than the color on the box the moment you finish shaking the mixture. It takes a couple of minutes for the actual color to show up on the mixture so don’t freak out!”
