At least there's good stuff to read

Summer is practically here, and with its sticky, sweaty, sultry arrival comes lots of great books to read; they're bound to make the whole season that much stickier, sweatier, and more sultry—a very good thing, I think! (Look, I love the heat, what can I say?)

Below are 35 books I'd recommend you take to the beach, the park, or even just into bed, for those days when you know better than to venture outside into the shimmering heat.

Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett (available June 4)
If you don't follow Kristen Arnett on Twitter, you should probably do so right now; she's a rare bright spot on a soul-deadening site. And if you do follow her, or are otherwise familiar with her writing, you've probably been eagerly anticipating this, her debut novel, and it doesn't disappoint: It is precisely as strange, riotous, searing, and subversive as you'd want it to be. (And, yes, its humor is as dark and glinting as the black plastic eye of a taxidermy ferret.) The novel centers around the Morton family, whose patriarch has killed himself on one of the tables of the family taxidermy business. Daughter Jessa discovers him and soon takes over the business operations, though she's impeded by her mother, who begins to arrange the animals in sexually provocative positions, and brother, who is having a hard time functioning, particularly after his wife—with whom Jessa has long been in love—walks out on him. Got all that? It's chaotic, yes, but it's also a celebration of the strangeness of life and love and loss, all of it as murky as a Florida swamp but beautiful in its wildness.

Patsy by Nicole Dennis-Benn (available June 4)
I adored Nicole Dennis-Benn's radiant debut novel, Here Comes the Sun, and her stunning second novel only serves to solidify her place as one of the finest novelists writing today. Patsy is a story of the ache of motherhood and loss and is a timely example of the sacrifices made by immigrants who come to America seeking all too elusive opportunities. Centering around Patsy—who gets a coveted visa to America and leaves not only her home in Jamaica, but also her young daughter—the novel delves into Patsy's disappointments at what she finds in America, but also her relief in being able to explore her sexuality in a way she couldn't do in Jamaica. But also, Dennis-Benn examines the effect Patsy's departure has on her daughter, Tru, who is struggling to make sense of her own sexuality and come to terms with what it means to have been abandoned by her mother. It's a heartbreaking, sensitive book that not only deftly demonstrates the impossible choices women must make in order to live the lives they want to live, but also exposes the specific hardships of immigrants in America, whose lives are made nearly impossible because of arbitrary and unjust legislation.

Banshee by Rachel DeWoskin (available June 4)
What would you do if you found out your life might end sooner than you'd thought? Like, much sooner? That's exactly the question Samantha Baxter must ask herself when her relatively low-key existence, complete with a secure job and loving family, is threatened with her imminent demise. Samantha's answer to that question is not to go quietly into the night, and instead to rage in any and every way she can: Soon, she's forgoing social niceties, sleeping with a much (much!) younger woman, and living out the kind of scorched-earth fantasy that many women—after a lifetime of apologizing for taking up space—absolutely crave. DeWoskin's novel is an indictment on a society that prioritizes the experiences of men and has never been comfortable with a woman's anger.

Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok (available June 4)
The titular mystery that launches this stunning novel by Jean Kwok is the disappearance of Sylvie, the eldest daughter of the Lee family, who vanished into thin air after a trip to the Netherlands. It's up to Sylvie's much younger sister, Amy, to make sense of why Sylvie disappeared; in the process, family secrets are revealed and painful truths come to light. Kwok tells this story of an immigrant family with lucidity and compassion, there is sympathy for difficult choices made, but nothing is sentimentalized. Instead, this is a profoundly moving portrayal of the complicated identities that exist even within a single family, and it offers a graceful portrait of the sacrifices we make for love, and the ways in which our choices can't help but forever affect those around us.

Leaving the Witness: Exiting a Religion and Finding a Life by Amber Scorah (available June 4)
When Amber Scorah visited China, she went covertly as a religious proselytizer—a Jehovah's Witness, intent on converting others to her faith. But, during her time there, it was Scorah who underwent her own conversion, leaving the restrictive religion in which she'd been raised, and navigating a brand-new world for herself—one without any familiar benchmarks, one in which she was alone, but free to be herself. Scorah's account of this time is compelling and lucid; she offers a fascinating glimpse into the consciousness of being an outsider in every possible way, and what it takes to find your path into the life you'd like to lead.

The Summer Demands by Deborah Shapiro (available June 4)
Deborah Shapiro opens up her latest novel with an evocative description of that most provocative of seasons: "Summer, green and still and slightly grainy." Those seven words instantly transport you into the haze of this book, in which Emily feels like the summer of her life is disappearing, like her days of fertility and growth are over. She's almost 40 and just lost a pregnancy; it's in this tenuous state that she moves with her husband to an abandoned summer camp, where she meets 22-year-old Stella, whose summertime is just beginning. The two have a magnetic, sparking connection, which makes clear the ways in which the intimate relationships between women can bring up palpable feelings of desire, envy, and liberation.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (available June 4)
If you haven't yet read Ocean Vuong's Night Sky with Exit Wounds, please do so immediately. And then, because you'll want to read more of his work right away, read "A Letter to My Mother That She Will Never Read," an essay he wrote for The New Yorker that will scrape your insides out clean. And then, well, just be patient till his debut novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, comes out this June, because you'll be used to being eviscerated by Vuong's glistering words by then, and you'll want to feel that white-hot pain again and again. This novel is told as a letter from an only son to his single mother who cannot read; it speaks to their family history, which begins in Vietnam and continues in America. It is a story of love and identity, transience and trauma, tenderness and rage and survival, and Vuong writes with a clear beauty and insistence unlike any other writer working today.

Oval by Elvia Wilk (available June 4)
You know how if you repeat a word over and over to yourself, it eventually loses its meaning and just becomes a series of sounds, devoid of any actual context? I feel like, maybe, that's been happening with the word "sustainability"; it's lost its meaning after being repeated over and over again, absent of its intended context. Of course, the difference here is that I'm not the one repeating it over and over again, rather its increasing ubiquity is thanks to brands and tech bros and, well, media companies, who have decided to latch on to the word "sustainability" just as decisively as they once did other buzzwords, like "optimization" or "actionable" or "Allbirds." There's a very dystopian quality to the whole thing, of course, which is to say that it feels all too real. So: Oval. Wilk's debut novel takes place in Berlin, where a young woman, Anja, lives with her boyfriend, Louis, in a sustainability-forward commune on the side of an artificial mountain. They both work in ambiguous creative capacities at corporate jobs and are fully invested in their urban lives—they party with friends, they fuck, they fight, they contend with conflicting emotions about their place in the world, and their responsibility to it and to each other. Oh, and the titular Oval? It's a pill that gives its users a euphoric feeling when they behave altruistically—it's as disturbingly brilliant an idea as so much of what gets proposed by theoretically well-meaning innovators today. (Jack Dorsey is kicking himself that he didn't think of it first.) Oval is a must-read for anyone cynical about the way in which we're constantly being marketed to, and Wilk's deftness as she takes on our current societal woes is awe-inspiring. This is the perfect send-up of the world we live in, a reminder that dystopia is all around us—and that it's being sold with the promise of making everything better.

In West Mills by De'Shawn Charles Winslow (available June 4)
The debut novel of De'Shawn Charles Winslow, In West Mills is remarkable in its ability to create a fully realized world, the kind that feels like you must have visited before, a place where you'd happily spend all your time. The narrative follows Azalea "Knot" Centre, a fan of "cheap moonshine, nineteenth-century literature, and the company of men," (which, I get it, don't you?), who finds herself shunned by much of her community, and so seeks companionships with her neighbor, Otis Lee Loving, who appreciates the project of fixing up Knot's life—not least because he has many problems of his own he hasn't been able to solve. Winslow's writing is full of compassion and wit and generosity; he skillfully weaves together a story of the power of love and friendship, and their ability to redeem even the most troubled souls. This is the kind of book that leaves you smiling, with faith in humanity, and in art's ability to be gracious and redemptive too.

Bunny by Mona Awad (available June 11)
You don't need to be a fan of The Secret History to know that the best college novels are prone to going to incredibly dark places. In fact, you don't even need to look toward fiction to be aware that colleges are fertile ground for things like sex cults (hey, Sarah Lawrence). But what you should really do is pick up Mona Awad's new novel, Bunny, and get an even clearer picture of just how depraved and deviant students can be toward one another. Set in the MFA fiction program at New England's Warren University, Bunny centers around scholarship student Samantha Mackey, who finds herself drawn toward—and then welcomed into—a selective cohort of her fellow students, who are collectively called, and call themselves, Bunny. Awad has written a dark, twisted novel that sharply interrogates women's relationships to one another and to art, academia, and class—it's the kind of book that leaves a taste in your mouth, the taste of blood. Who knew that would taste so good?

Fleishman Is in Trouble by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (available June 18)
For me, summer has never really meant going to the beach or escaping to the mountains; I've always equated it with fetid New York sidewalks, steaming days spent in city parks, and occasional brief trips to Long Island's East End that are mostly defined by the traffic-clogged roads. If all those things scream "summer" to you too—and even if they don't—then you will love journalist Taffy Brodesser-Akner's smart, witty, ur-New York debut, Fleishman Is in Trouble. Centering around a recently divorced doctor, Toby Fleishman, the novel is told from the perspective of one of Fleishman's college friends, Libby, and offers glimpses into the ultra-wealthy lifestyle of Fleishman, his ex-wife, Rachel (whose demanding career funds said lifestyle; doctors are very middle-class in this milieu), and their two children. The novel starts off with Rachel dropping off the kids at Toby's place for the weekend and just not returning; but there's also peeks into the online dating life of a newly single man in his early 40s (it's very active!), and piercing insight into the ways people grow apart while still sharing a bed. It's biting and bracing, and—like the best beach reads—offers unflinching insight into the unexplored depths of the human condition.

The Tenth Muse by Catherine Chung (available June 18)
There is, as any lover of numbers and equations knows, an elegance to math—a poetry, a musicality. As much as any artistic genius is reliant on inspiration, so too is a mathematical genius; they all need their muses. But, this is not the way math is usually considered—with fluidity, with grace, with femininity. Or, it's not the way it has been considered, but, in The Tenth Muse, Catherine Chung does exactly that, presenting the life of Katherine, a woman who was a math prodigy, and became one of the first female graduates of MIT in the 1960s. Katherine has always felt like an outsider within her primarily male academic and professional community, but she has also felt that way within her personal life. Still, though, her ambitions—including one to solve the enigmatic Riemann hypothesis—drive her, even as she also tries to uncover the mysteries of her family's past. This shimmering, gorgeous book grapples with the secrets in the world around us, and the one within us; Chung's prose is electric, and this story is a provocative exploration of the puzzles that most need interrogating.

Lifelines by Heidi Diehl (available June 18)
The early 1970s was, perhaps, not the best time to move from America to Germany, which was not only still grappling with its World War II legacy, but was also dealing with the actions of the Baader-Meinhof gang, and the fallout from the disastrous Munich Olympics. And yet, that's exactly what Louise, an American art student, did. She moved to Dusseldorf to study, met and married another visual artist, and had a baby. But, after her mother fell ill and with her marriage in turmoil, Louise moved back home to Oregon, where she—and her baby—stayed. Decades later, Louise is still an artist and has remarried, and had another daughter, when she is called back to Germany, after learning that her former-mother-in-law has died. What ensues is a fascinating interrogation of complicated histories—both cultural and personal—as well as an exploration of the roles that art, family, and creativity play in our lives.

A Sand Book by Ariana Reines (available June 18)
I always think I'll read books of poems in an episodic way, dipping into them and then pulling back, not consuming them all at once. I'm pretty much always wrong about that, but never more so than when reading Ariana Reines' A Sand Book; I feel like I engorged myself on her words, till I was near to bursting. It would not be the worst way to go. In her much-anticipated follow-up to Mercury, Reines has written a feverishly glistering collection, making connections between the many disparate parts of our existence. These are the kinds of poems that reorient you in the world, make you understand how little you know, but how much is inside you. Lines like "the suffering of woman is/ the story of the universe" will linger in the front of your skull, imprinting themselves on your consciousness in a way that feels risky and real, like you've unlocked the key to some hidden truth, some undiscovered light.

The Gone Dead by Chanelle Benz (available June 25)
This debut novel centers around Billie James, a 34-year-old woman who has just returned to the Mississippi Delta, after leaving the area 30 years before with her mother. Billie has come back because she's been left the shack where her father, a renowned poet, moved after he abandoned Billie and her mother, and where he died not long after in what was presumed to be an accident. But as Billie fixes up the shack so that she can rent it out, she uncovers evidence that leads her to explore the events surrounding her father's death; she also navigates the complex web of racism and historical injustice that permeate the area. Benz writes with a propulsive energy; it's difficult to put this book down, her words wash over you with a beauty made all the more surreal for the darkness they're conveying. There are no easy answers offered by Benz, but why should there be? The legacy of racism and injustice that permeate this country is so deep and gnarled, that all we can do is try and get at its roots, try to understand from where we've grown, and try to make sense of it all so we can move forward.

The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean (available June 25)
If there's a more compelling summer book description than "The Virgin Suicides-meets-Picnic at Hanging Rock," I don't know what it would be. Such was the description given to me about this book, and it doesn't disappoint. Told from the point of view of Tikka Malloy, who was 11 years old during the sordid, steaming, Australian summer of 1992, a year now infamous for the dingo-snatching baby trial, The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone sees Tikka as an adult who's come home to Australia from America, because her sister, Laura, is dying from cancer. Once home, Tikka is flooded with memories of that fateful summer, when the three Van Apfel sisters—all enigmatic in that way only truly beautiful people are—disappeared. There is much about this book that is bittersweet in the way of all sad memories; the bitterness of loss speaks for itself, the sweetness comes from having survived it all. But also, there's no point in which McClean sentimentalizes the tragedy of a young woman's life being cut short; this is not a beautiful tragedy, it's purely tragic. It's rare, and even unnerving, to read something like this and find it absent of that kind of fetishization of a young woman's life, and thus full of tenderness and compassion, and a real sense of what gets lost in these situations.

How Could She by Lauren Mechling (available June 25)
Summer is a season of delusion, one in which we try to convince ourselves that the existing bounty and heat will last forever. And even as we notice the days getting progressively shorter, we trick ourselves into still feeling the heat. Speaking of the ways we lie to ourselves: Have you stopped lately to consider your close friendships? And the many ways in which our interactions with other women reveal so much about ourselves precisely because they involve hiding so much? This interplay between aggressive honesty and willful delusion that's inherent to so many of our friendships is central to Lauren Mechling's brilliant new novel, which is an incisive, brutally funny look at one year in the lives of three close friends: Geraldine, Sunny, and Rachel. Mechling deftly examines the personal politics involved in managing this type of triangular friendship (spoiler: it's far from equilateral, yet its angles are always shifting), while also parsing the ways in which we use our friends' achievements to measure our own self-worth. This is the perfect summer read for any woman who spends more time worrying about why a friend hasn't texted her back than why a romantic interest hasn't. Just don't forget to make your friends read it too, so that you can demand of them which of the characters they think you're most like.

Stay and Fight by Madeline ffitch (available July 9)
We often think of protest novels as being predicated on resistance toward the state, or toward malevolent forces too large to properly comprehend. But most of the ways in which we protest are small; they're petty pushbacks against friends, against family; they're often the most significant protests of all. It's this kind of intimate protest that Madeline ffitch writes about in her debut novel; it takes place in Appalachian America, an historically clannish area, and centers around a motley, makeshift family. There are Lily and Karen, who are married and had lived in an area called the Women's Land Trust, but when they have a son, Perley, they realize they need to find somewhere new to go. Luckily, Helen and her RV come into their lives, and the four of them live together, not really a part of society until Perley gets old enough to want to go to school. It's then that the resistance kicks in, as this close-knit group must figure out how to preserve the things they love, and determine what's worth fighting against and for.

Vincent and Alice and Alice by Shane Jones (available July 9)
"I'm hyperventilating, wondering what's real and what isn't." Meet Vincent, who has his moment of wondering what's real and what isn't as he wanders around a mall, looking for the facsimile of his ex-wife, Alice, that's been created for him by a program that his boss told him about, one that is designed to give Vincent his "ideal" life—which, in this case, means recreating Alice. This would all be reason enough for confusion, ample cause for Vincent to question the reality of everything around him. But to make things even more confusing, the real Alice comes back into Vincent's life. Shane Jones has created a riotous, tender story here, one that pulses with desire and anxiety and speaks to our common need to have someone or something to love, the only thing that will really give us purpose. It's funny and tragic, and speaks volumes about the way that we've allowed our lives to be taken over by a quest for productivity at the expense of our humanity.

Circus by Wayne Koestenbaum (available July 9)
This Soft Skull reissue of Wayne Koestenbaum's 2004 debut novel (now with an introduction by Rachel Kushner!) is the perfect book for summer: It's fever-hot, lurid to the extreme, and filled with the kind of lunatic linguistic acrobatics that leave you gasping for air. Theo Mangrove is a concert pianist who, after suffering a nervous breakdown, has retreated to his family home; he's not alone, of course, there's a steady stream of people (Theo is a true pansexual; who even, sometimes, fucks his wife) to keep him occupied. But, with his sexual needs taken care of, Theo is keen to make a comeback and to recruit the famed opera singer Moira Orfei to be at his side. His obsession with her and his many other petty enthusiasms occupy the novel, which comprises 25 of Theo's notebooks, all filled with the ramblings of the type of person who's preoccupied with creation, despair, genius, failure, and delusion. In other words, an artist.

The Need by Helen Phillips (available July 9)
Becoming a mother is the ultimate generous act; often, it starts by playing host to an alien life form within your own body; then, it necessarily involves the expansion of your life—your home, your mind, your body, your heart—to accommodate this new being. It's disruptive, it's chaotic, it's life-destroying and -affirming all at once. It's a romance and a thriller and definitely very sci-fi. But it's also so common, that it's rarely given its due appreciation. Luckily, The Need, the eerily gorgeous new novel by Helen Phillips, fills the void, offering up the perfect, insightful look into the way motherhood warps the world around you. Molly is a working mother of two young children; while her husband is away on a business trip, and she is left alone with the kids, Molly is overwhelmed and begins to perceive a mysterious threat invading her home. Phillips brilliantly captures the dissonant dualities of being a mother: the ways strength is matched with fragility, tenderness with ferocity, nurturing with palpable, almost riotous need. Phillips' language is beautiful and blistering, it feels raw and mundane in the way of an open wound, or a nipple, chafed from constantly breastfeeding.

A Prayer for Travelers by Ruchika Tomar (available July 9)
Ruchika Tomar's debut novel is a fierce account of the violent cost of being a woman in this world, the fierceness with which women will go to save each other, and the surreal desolation—both literal and psychic—of the American West. The book centers around Cale and Penny, two young women whose paths cross at just the right moment to bond them together. Cale is the sedate one and Penny is the wild one, but when Penny disappears, it's Cale who must go on a quest to find her, and save them both. Tomar writes with blistering precision, her portrayal of the ways in which we're formed by love and trauma is sensitive, yet searing.

Costalegre by Courtney Maum (available July 16)
In 1937, Europe was on the brink of war, and somebody had to think of the artists. That person is heiress and art aficionado Leonora Calaway (loosely based on real-life heiress and art aficionado Peggy Guggenheim), who helps a group of surrealists escape Europe for Costalegre, Calaway's hideaway in Mexico. Also at Costalegre is Calaway's teenage daughter, Lara (based on Guggenheim's teenage daughter, Pegeen), who greets these artists with some skepticism—this is what she was pulled out of school for? Soon enough, though, she starts to appreciate the lush paradise and its possibilities, as she builds a connection with a much older sculptor, in the hopes of finding some of the love she's never gotten from her mother. Maum dazzles with this book, offering up a mesmerizing story of alienation, intimacy, and the elusive powers of art.

The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead (available July 16)
Colson Whitehead's follow-up to The Underground Railroad is devastating and powerful, a harrowing novelization on another dark aspect of American history. The titular "Nickel Boys" are the young men who are being held in Florida's Nickel Academy, a Florida reform school that Whitehead modeled after a real institution that ruined the lives of Florida boys for over 100 years. Whitehead tells this story through the experiences of two boys: Elwood, who was on his way to college, winds up at Nickel Academy by a cruel twist of fate, and remains convinced that the world is still a good and fair place; and Turner, who knows better. Never didactic, but always illuminating—even those darkest of places in our collective story—The Nickel Boys is a brilliant, horrifying look into the legacy of Jim Crow, and the ways in which racism and oppression don't exist in defiance to the American Dream, but rather as its fuel.

Screen Tests: Stories and Other Writing by Kate Zambreno (available July 23)
There is a singular twitchiness intrinsic to brilliance, a quickness that's always primed to start sparking. It's difficult to capture this in fiction, because this kind of mercurial motion doesn't really like to be restrained on the page. But, it's vividly present in Kate Zambreno's latest, Screen Tests (not "Scream Tests," but also not not "Scream Tests," maybe). This collection of stories and snippets ranges far and wide within the reaches of Zambreno's mind, touching on topics like nemeses and art and dogs in film; Zambreno also reflects on cultural figures from Peter Hujar and Kathy Acker to Amal Clooney, offering skewed, subversive perspectives that manage to make my own thoughts on the subjects that much more lucid. It's the rare book that's a pure joy to read, but this is one; it delights in petty enthusiasms and grievances, it steals its way into your consciousness like only the most worthwhile things do.

The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom (available August 13)
This memoir is the story of a house; it's also the story of an entire world. Sarah M. Broom has done a masterful job of telling the story of her mother's house, expanding it so that the narrative goes beyond its walls and encompasses the whole city of New Orleans, and probes the boundaries of what we mean when we talk about family, love, and community. The house in question was bought by Broom's mother, Ivory Mae, in 1961; she would get married there, to Simon Broom, and their families combined to make 12 children, with Sarah being the last, born just six months before her father's death. Ivory Mae stayed in the house, though, even as the world changed around her; up until Hurricane Katrina took the house away. It's a powerful tale of home, family, inequality, displacement, and love, and Broom tells it with strength, lucidity, and grace.

A Particular Kind of Black Man by Tope Folarin (available August 6)
This searing, powerful novel is a stunning debut by Tope Folarin, offering a look into the disorienting life of a first-generation Nigerian-American. Tunde Akinola was born in America and is growing up in Utah, a place where white kids ask him why he can't rub the black off his skin; his Nigerian-born father and mother experience life in Utah in a different way—from Tunde and from one another. His father insists everything will be fine; his mother can't stand it, and eventually flees back to Nigeria, alone. Tunde can't follow her, but never stops needing her; even as he grows up, gains a stepmother and stepsiblings, goes to college, and becomes a man, he always looks for his mother, for home. Folarin has written a compelling, lyrical story about alienation and identity, the kind that sticks inside you long after you've finished reading.

White Flights: Race, Fiction, and the American Imagination by Jess Row (available August 6)
This fascinating book explores the concepts of white flight and gentrification through the lens of whiteness within American culture—specifically fiction. Jess Row closely examines the way the giants of late-20th century American fiction—people like Jonathan Franzen, David Foster Wallace, Marilynne Robinson, Don DeLillo, and Richard Ford—restricted their work to inherently white milieus, making sure that there would be no interrogation of the issue of race within their pages. Row posits that fiction's segregation is self-imposed, often in the name of the same kind of "safety" that led whites to flee cities and settle in de facto (though sometimes literal) gated communities; he's sure that fiction can be used to start conversations, to breach the boundaries we've been told are impermeable. Row's writing is consistently compelling, a necessary read for anyone who wants their art to be challenging, not merely comforting.

Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion by Jia Tolentino (available August 6)
You've almost definitely read Jia Tolentino before; her articles for The New Yorker, where she's a staff writer, are some of the publication's most popular. And it's for good reason! Tolentino brings a singular incisiveness and wit to everything she covers, from the rise of Juuling to the phenomenon that is the athleisure brand Outdoor Voices. So prepare to get really excited for her book of essays, which combines cutting commentary on our culture's current obsession with optimizing everything (including our own bodies) with a holistic look at our collective willingness to deceive ourselves just so we can keep the promise of a happily ever after alive.

The Remainder by Alia Trabucco Zeran, translated by Sophie Hughes (available August 6)
Short-listed for the Man Booker International Prize, this beautiful, profound novel shows trauma's lingering effects, the way that it can still be felt even by those who didn't experience it firsthand. Three friends—Felipe, Paloma, and Iquela—live in Santiago, Chile, where their lives are still shadowed by the brutality of Chile's dictatorship, and haunted by the actions of their parents. When her mother dies and the body gets lost in transit, Paloma and her friends go on a road trip to lay her—and the pain they carry within them—to rest. It's a mesmerizing, roaming look at intergenerational trauma, told in a specific and surreal style that shimmers and shifts on the page and in the mind.

Socialist Realism by Trisha Low (available August 13)
I've really been enjoying phone calls lately; there's one friend I love to talk to, who lives far away, and it's wonderful to just be quiet and be inside her mind for a while. There's something so specifically satisfying about winding along someone's neural pathways with them, happily at their side. And while Trisha Low is not a friend of mine, and we've never talked on the phone, I got the same feeling while reading her slim, generous, meditative book, Socialist Realism; I was so thrilled to be along on the ride into Low's thoughts, as she contemplated and interrogated everything from her relationships to her family to the idea of home to the political landscape to desire to the concept of compromising. Reading this felt expansive and freeing, like the best kind of daydream, one I'd willingly slip into again and again.

Inland by Téa Obreht (available August 13)
Set in the desolation of the Arizona Territory in 1893, Téa Obreht's latest novel is permeated with restlessness, a low-level thrum that speaks to the wild unpredictability of the terrain and the people who populate it. One of those people is Nora, a wife and mother whose husband has gone in search of water, and whose elder sons left home after a massive fight; Nora remains on her homestead with only her youngest son, who is himself spooked by the nature around him. Another of those people is Lurie, an outlaw trying to make peace with all that haunts him. Their paths intersect as Obreht uses her prodigious writing gifts to create a new mythology for the American West, one that glimmers with the intensity of a desert mirage.

Devotion by Madeline Stevens (available August 13)
This captivating book is like if Single White Female met The Nanny Diaries (okay, I've never seen the latter, but I can imagine, right?), and it's just the kind of propulsive, lurid read I'm always craving. Ella is 26, broke and directionless; but good fortune falls from the sky in the form of a nannying job for wealthy Lonnie and James. Lonnie is also 26, but her life couldn't be more different than Ella's; filled as it is with a husband, baby, and money—lots of it. The two form a quick bond, but it becomes more of an obsession for Ella, whose envy and resentment toward Lonnie grow to feverish levels. Madeline Stevens has written a thriller that also explores the unlikely, but feverishly intense, romance between two women who are similar but forever separated by their privilege.

Black Card by Chris L. Terry (available August 13)
Perhaps nothing can feel more elusive than determining your own identity, but Chris L. Terry does a magnificent job of dissecting all the ways in which identity both is and isn't a construct in his brilliant new book, Black Card. Centered around a mixed-race musician who distinguishes himself by his white bandmates by doing "black stuff," the novel makes clear the very real complications and dangers that come with both embracing and denying the identity America bestows upon a person based on the color of their skin. Terry employs a fierce humor throughout the narrative, but don't mistake wit for detachment—this book is deeply moving, a wise meditation on race, authenticity, and belonging.

The World Doesn't Require You by Rion Amilcar Scott (available August 20)
His newest story collection displays the expansive creative genius of Rion Amilcar Scott, who has created a world so vivid and whole, it's hard to return to reality after spending time in it. Scott's creation is the fictional Cross River, in Maryland, a town long-ago established by the leaders of America's sole successful slave rebellion—as origin myths go, it's a powerful one, and it still echoes within its residents' consciousness generations later. Scott introduces us to a cast of finely wrought characters, all of whom grapple with issues related to power, violence, love—life. Scott's prose sparkles—it's absurdist at times, surreal, and hilarious, but it's always profoundly affecting, an essential reminder of all the people who've had to construct a home for themselves in a hostile world. That they've done so with brilliance and grace is not because of the unfriendly people around them but in spite of them.

Liberation can come from completion, but then, we are always becoming something new

They say the full moon is about completion. About looking back at the intentions you crowned the new moon with and seeing where those intentions led you. The new moon in Gemini was the pebble that began this cycle, and the full moon in Sagittarius is her echo, the ring getting larger in the water. The new moon in Gemini asked us what we wanted to change about our habits, what we wanted to do with our hands, and our hunger for newness. The new moon in Gemini was interested in the way shifting ideas can give us the freedom to think differently and, in thinking differently, become new people. The full moon in Sagittarius reminds us that we are never not becoming new.

Both Gemini and Sagittarius are mutable signs, they exist in relation to the other and they know how to speak each other's language. But, while Gemini relishes the endless capacity of air (of thought), Sagittarius uses the energy of fire to transform thought into action. Everything Sagittarius touches can't help but change. How can this be completion? The wheel is always spinning, reader. Sagittarius marks the completion of the fire trine. Here, fire is generous and social. It means to gather and teach, to illuminate. Sagittarius lives in the sector of the zodiac chart related to education, philosophy, and the awareness of others—their beliefs and their right to freedom. Because of this, our June Sagittarius full moon is both a completion moon and a moon that reminds us that all endings create space for beginning. The more you leave behind, the more you find. There is no dead end in the universe.

If you are a seeker like me (perhaps you have lots of planets in Sagittarius in your natal chart), you have already come across Jessica Dore's Twitter account. Every day, Dore posts a tarot card and her interpretation of it. It is a gift to many of her readers. Yesterday, she shared The World with us, reminding her readers: "the moments of beauty, belonging & elation that you've experienced up to this point in your life… would still only amount to the tiniest sliver of what this world has to offer in terms of sweetness & pleasure."

I thought about this card and her words all day. The World is, numerically, the last card in the Major Arcana journey—the last card if you don't think about the Fool, who is numbered at 0 and so is the beginning and the end. The World is, therefore, a completion card too, a big echo of a full moon.

This morning, holding the sweet and expansive nature of The World, thinking on Sagittarius people and their love of travel, of reckoning with the edge of an atlas and questioning the map-makers, I pulled the nine of swords from my own Tarot deck. The other side of knowledge is to overwhelm and shut down. Gemini, ruled by Mercury, holds information in her hands. She understands duality in all things. Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter, yearns for the expansion of mind and the illumination of power. The philosopher and the moralist, a Sagittarius at her best can teach anyone to break open a prison. A Sagittarius at her worst can justify any cage. Don't forget that Jupiter was the king of the gods. His lightning bolt was a weapon. Sometimes, we are too exposed to each other. We imagine we know others through the stories we create about one another. We imagine we know the future because we refuse to be humble about how vulnerable we are to the universe's ever-shifting outcomes. We refuse abundance by convincing ourselves that the cage of identity we build for ourselves is our only possibility.

For the next two days, as the Sun lingers in Gemini and we feel the effects of the moon's fullness in Sagittarius, reflect on the ways you have used knowledge. When has your knowledge been a tool of empowerment for yourself and others? When have you shared the beauty of the world and the joy of radical ideas/ways of living? When have you used knowledge to understand and relieve your own suffering and the suffering of others? And, too, when have you used knowledge as permission for self-delusion? When you have expanded so far into your idea of the world and your own work in it that you forgot how to be accountable to your daily life, your body, your friends, and the people you love? You know when Janis Joplin sings "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose"? That's only one kind of freedom, and it's the kind that Sagittarius thinks it knows very well. Freedom can be about nothing, if nothing is what you want. Then welcome to the monastery, friend. Freedom can also be another word for everything you revel in not knowing. Freedom can be about having everything because you are part of everything, even if you can't see the relation, even if you can't imagine yet how what you want also wants you.

Kat is making me relive my fat-teen trauma

When people say that HBO's new Zendaya-led teen drama, Euphoria, is triggering, believe them. In the pilot alone we're introduced to Rue (Zendaya) and her drug addiction issues via a graphic depiction of the overdose that sent her to rehab. Then, there's the disturbing rough sex scene featuring Jules (Hunter Schafer), a teenage trans girl who has just moved into town, and a middle-aged man she met on Grindr. Oh, and don't forget the unchecked, toxic masculinity of uber-jock Nate (Jacob Elordi); or the body obsession of his sometimes-girlfriend, Maddy (Alexa Demie). For me though, the ultimate trigger came via Barbie Ferreira's character Kat's experience, as she dealt with and internalized a vicious form of fatphobia.

Kat—almost alone amongst her friends—seems self-assured and dismissive of the idea that any high school drama should be taken too seriously. "You just need to catch a dick and forget about your troubles," Kat tells Maddy, following the latter's recent breakup with Nate. But internally, Kate craves male attention, and resents the fact that she's the only virgin she knows; she hints at this when she tells Maddy that she'd "settle for, like, four Corona Lights and some non-rapey affection," from a guy—any guy.

Kat's bravado leads her into a compromising situation at a high school party; she winds up in a room alone with three boys, where she talks a big game about how she's a "savage" who watches porn and has slept with more people than any of them can count. None of this is true, but Kat is determined to become "a woman of questionable morals."

The scene shows the fine line between being an empowered young woman deciding what to do with her body, on her terms, and being a teenager who thinks she's in control but doesn't fully understand the power dynamics at play. Because, yes, Kat is trying to make an intentional decision about her sexuality and how to use it, but she's doing so with a group of boys who don't value or respect her. This reality is made clear when one of them says to her, "You know what they say, right? Fat girls give the best head."

At those familiar words, I melted into my couch and said a silent prayer of gratitude that I wasn't watching Euphoria in the company of anyone else. Onscreen, Kat, too, shrinks ever so slightly into herself, all while trying to keep a poker face about the whole thing. We don't see exactly what happens in the room, but, later, she seems happy when she shares the news with her friends that she's lost her virginity; even though she then lays down, awake, scrolling through the guy's Instagram, seeming altogether less than happy.

Kat's isn't the most violent or necessarily the saddest story line in the episode. But it showed the ways that issues like consent, toxic masculinity, substance abuse, and body image—all of which are difficult to deal with no matter what your size—are further magnified when experienced through the additional trauma of fatphobia. This is something with which I've personally dealt, and so I felt my past experiences rise up inside me when I watched how Kat couldn't build her own sexual identity without being constantly aware of the ways her body exists outside the parameters of acceptable desirability.

My childhood and adolescence are defined by my experiences as a fat girl; it was a time that often felt like a hazy battlefield, when I could hardly navigate which feelings and thoughts were my own, and which ones were the result of outside forces. My body hardly ever felt like mine, and it took years to develop the autonomy that Kat is grasping at as a teenager. Kat, like so many other fat women, has a total lack of support from her peers when it comes to body image and acceptance, and there's a devastating absence of affirmation about her own worth and the importance of her pleasure. Because of fatphobia, Kat is going to be swimming against a strong, but invisible current as she navigates the already fraught social politics of high school. It's one thing to grasp this truth on an intellectual level, but letting those principles guide your decision-making is truly difficult—even for an adult, let alone for a teenager.

Euphoria airs Sunday nights at 10pm, on HBO.

White-knuckle your way through wedding season with Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid

Maya Erskine might have first come to our attention in PEN15, the hilarious show she co-created and stars in with Anna Konkle, in which they play 13-year-olds in the year 2000, but in the just-released Plus One, Erskine is all grown up and engaging in a very familiar adult activity: white-knuckling her way through wedding season.

Written and directed by Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer—who just so happen to be Erskine's former NYU classmates—Plus One stars Erskine and Jack Quaid as Alice and Ben, two longtime friends who decide to attend a summer of weddings together, and avoid any of the awkwardness that can come with finding the right plus-one. This is especially important for Alice, who is coming off a bad breakup. Of course, as the laws of rom-coms dictate, nothing stays totally platonic. Beyond that, though, Plus One doesn't fall into predictable rom-com tropes, and instead hilariously explores what it's like to spiral into a quarter-life crisis, all while dressed in optional black-tie. Which, we've all been there, right?

"We kind of use the script as its own therapy," Chan told me recently, when I spoke with him, Rhymer, Erskine, and Quaid, about the film. "We were watching friends who have been broken up for a long time get back together at weddings; we were watching people get really sad and get drunk and start crying... they were breeding grounds for lots of emotions coming to the surface."

And those emotions have the perfect outlet at weddings in the form of toasts and other assorted speeches. Plus One makes good use of that platform by making the wedding speech the hilarious eye of the storm at each of its weddings. These toasts were delivered in the form of scene-stealing cameos—also friends from NYU, of course.

"Almost all of those speeches are based on a real speech Andrew and I have seen," Chan said. "We'd go to a wedding and [we'd think], Yep, that's going in there."

Rhymer adds that they used these speeches as metonyms for the weddings, which made sense time- and budget-wise: "Being an indie film, we obviously produced 12 weddings, but did so kind of cleverly, showing you the rooms or the side rooms where they're rehearsing. We weren't seeing 12 full-blown receptions in all their glory... that would have been, like, millions of dollars."

But perhaps what's most refreshing about Plus One is that it destroys the image of weddings—and, by extension, relationships, and women, in general—as having to be fantasies, as having to be perfect. Because nothing is perfect, and that's what makes life interesting. Erskine, for one, likes being able to show the weirder sides of life, whether as a 13-year-old girl washing a thong with hand soap or a millennial woman who doesn't know what comes next. "There's something really liberating and freeing to show and bear the ugliest parts of yourself—or what society may deem as the ugliest, weirdest parts of yourself—that no one wants to see," she said. "I'm also an over-sharer. So I am drawn to roles that expose more than is typical, and everyone is weird in one way or another."

"I think," Erskine laughed, "it's because I myself am a wacky trash goblin." As it turns out, that's exactly what rom-coms have been missing, until now.

That's one way to solve a wardrobe malfunction

Cardi B twerked so hard during a performance that she ripped her outfit and had to rock a bathrobe for the majority of her set.

At Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennesee, as Cardi got a little too down and into it, a seam split on her bedazzled body-con jumpsuit only moments into her set. Not one to be set back by a wardrobe malfunction, Cardi B rocked a nude strapless bra with a bathrobe on top, making for a Serious Fashion Moment.

"This wasn't just part of the show," Twitter user Lena Blietz pointed out. "No one performs in a nude, strapless bra by choice." I have to agree there. A strapless bra is the bane of my existence on a slow day, I can't imagine what it's like to have to dance in one on stage.


Honestly, watching Cardi perform in this getup made me a stan for life. Despite it not being as flashy as her jumpsuit, Cardi made the bathrobe work, throwing the shoulders down for drama as she paced the stage during each song.

Bonnaroo attendees couldn't help but agree that a bathrobe and nothing else is a mood we all felt in the very, very hot and sweaty crowd. If she had one in my size to share, I would have gladly changed in a heartbeat.

But, despite loving this comfy solution to a big problem, I'd like to take a moment to appreciate the beauty that was the original jumpsuit. RIP.

And launched an inclusive summer campaign showcasing 30 different models

Just in time for swim season, sustainable swimwear brand Summersalt launched an inclusive summer campaign, called Every Body is a Beach Body, and significantly expanded its size range.

The brand's sizes now go up to 24 and 2X—quite a jump from its previous availability, which went up to a size 14. Co-founders Reshma Chamberlin and Lori Coulter told NYLON that the size expansion was a must because "we know that there are countless women out there who are missing out on the joy of summer because they don't have the right suit." They noted that they have plans to expand the brand's sizing even more: "We're excited to continue to add more sizes and be even more inclusive."

For the summer campaign, each suit was fitted on 30 professional and non-professional models ranging in body type to ensure it would look great on as many bodies as possible. "We wanted the models for this campaign to be just as diverse and unique as our customers, and we're proud to show models of different sizes, races, gender identities, and physical abilities," said Chamberlin and Coulter. "We want our customers to see themselves in our models, and know that their body is a beach body, exactly as it is right now."

The new collection includes bright new colorways and styles to rock at the beach or the pool. There are bikinis, one-pieces, and even a swim tunic and leggings for modest fashion wearers.
