Birkenstock Is Getting The Proenza Schouler Treatment

Another day, another designer collaboration

by Erika Harwood

Fashion's love for "ugly" shoes is still going strong. This time, Proenza Schouler has teamed up with Birkenstock for a limited-edition collaboration, with some extra help from photographer Juergen Teller and art director Peter Miles as creative collaborators.

Since making the unlikely transformation from beloved mom sandal to high-fashion must-have, Birkenstock has accumulated a long list of designer partnerships, including ones with Opening Ceremony, Valentino, and Rick Owens, who once called the shoe "functional and sexy."

"We are excited to be partnering with Birkenstock as we have been longtime admirers and devotees of the brand. We are also thrilled to be working on this exciting venture alongside Juergen and Peter," said designer duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez in an official statement. "Birkenstock and Proenza Schouler both share a common respect and admiration for the craftsmanship and detailed work that goes into all of our products, and we are excited to celebrate these all important qualities in our collaboration."

The collection features Proenza-inspired interpretations of the classic Birkenstock Arizona and Milano sandals. The unisex shoes come in four colors — black, white, ochre (deep yellow), and silver — and range in price from $250 to $420. On Monday, the collaboration is available exclusively through Net-a-Porter, and will expand to select retailers worldwide on March 20, including 1774.com and proenzaschouler.com.
