With a pager, killer outfits, and a keen sense for sniffing out trouble, Buffy The Vampire Slayer first hit screens in 1997. She kept Sunnyvale safe for seven seasons, during which a slew of rising celebs also took part in the madness. Read on for a list of surprising guest appearances:

Ashanti: Season 7, Episode 14

The multi-platinum R&B singer famously appeared on Buffy as Xanders ill-fated love interest, Lissa. Despite appearing as a normal teenager, her character was actually a disguised demon who Buffy beheads to save her friend.

Amy Adams: Season 5, Episode 6

Before becoming a household name for her roles in Sharp Objects, The Woman in the Window, and Enchanted Adam’s made a brief appearance in the Sunnydale universe. In season five she played Tara’s brainwashed cousin Beth, who stops in town with a shocking secret.

Rachel Bilson: Season 7, Episode 18

In the episode “Dirty Girls,” Bilson plays Collen, a budding vampire-slayer who participates in (and presumably survives) the Hellmouth battle.

Kal Penn: Season 4, Episode 5

You may recognize Penn from the Harold and Kumar movies, or maybe you know him as Obama’s Associate Director of Public Engagement. But before all of that, he played a beer-loving college student on Buffy, who turns into a caveman after drinking a magically-spiked pint.

Bianca Lawson: Season 2, multiple episodes

In 1997 Lawson nabbed her first major on-screen role as vampire-slayer Kendra Young. Her fierce character met their demise the following year, but Lawson’s career went on. Since then she’s starred in Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, and Queen Sugar.

Shane West - Season 2, Episode 20

West famously broke everyone’s hearts as Landon in A Walk To Remember. But before meeting Jamie, West was Sean Dwyer, a member of the Sunnydale swimteam who discovers their coach is lacing the sauna steam with steroids. Which, obviously, is turning them into sea-monsters.

Amber Tamblyn - Season 6, Episode 6

Tamblyn — perhaps best known for her role as Tibby from The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants — planted her theatrical roots in Sunnyvale, where she appeared as Dawn Summer’s best friend Janice.

IMDB
Clea Duvall: Season 1, Episode 11

In Buffy Duvall played Marcie Ross, a Sunnyvale High student who was so consistently ignored that she became invisible. Following her stint on the series she appeared in American Horror Story: Asylum along with the films Argo, The Faculty, and But I’m A Cheerleader.

DB Woodside: Season 7

In season seven of Buffy, Woodside played Sunnyvale High’s new principal who worked as a freelance vampire-slayer in his free-time (we love a good side-hustle). After his time on the show, Woodside went on to act in Romeo Must Die, Suits, and Lucifer.
