This year’s awards season grand finale is here. After two months of postponement, the 2021 Oscars red carpet welcomed nominees and presenters for the actual in-person event on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
According to a letter from the show’s producers in mid-March, the Oscars dress code will aim for “a fusion of Inspirational and Aspirational, which in actual words means formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not.” (The official theme for the entire evening is official theme, “Bring Your Movie Love.”) This type of prompt could really mean anything, from channeling Old Hollywood’s style icons to setting a whole new sartorial tone for the future of awards show fashion.
Throughout the past few months, the red carpet circuit has been a mix of virtual and IRL appearances, with celebrities turning designer pajamas into evening-wear while attending awards shows from home. But if the most recent ceremonies are any indication, like the Golden Globes and Grammys, celebrities are ready to bring some high-glamour fashion moments to the red carpet once again.
