Onitsuka Tiger’s New Spring 2022 Collection Is The Exact Type Of Athluxury We Want To Wear
A sportswear-inspired collection made for the 21st century
Travel is undoubtedly on most of our minds — Onitsuka Tiger designer Andrea Pompilio’s included. For Spring 2022, the creative director of the Japanese fashion brand Onitsuka Tiger delivered the trip of a lifetime, even if only virtually. Presented during Milan Fashion Week, the brand took viewers on a journey from the Italian city to the streets of Tokyo with a short film titled “MILAN-TOKYO” that transformed empty airport terminals, bridges, and expressways into runways.
Inspired by nostalgia, the film captures a longing for the energy and excitement that comes with discovering a new destination. The clothing also reflects that sentiment. Best known for combining “fashion with sports, and heritage with innovation,” as described in the show’s press release, the label presented pieces rooted in dichotomies — this collection blending European influences with the vibrance of the Japanese metropolis.
Retro-inspired colorblocked windbreakers and pullovers were shown in bold teals, deep reds, and tiger prints, a nod to both the brand’s heritage and the Chinese zodiac (2022 is the year of the tiger). “For Onitsuka Tiger, I have a very particular philosophy — I always see a dark color as the main color,” Pompilio told Men’s Folio of his design style. Traditional performance fabrics were reworked in unconventional ways; think: nylon suits, tiered skirts, and longline shorts that are at once tailored and loose. Form-fitting dresses and two-piece matching sets were made sporty with thick varsity-style stripes. Plus, the brand unveiled two new styles of sneakers, including a pair of sleek kicks covered in Onitsuka Tiger’s signature tiger pattern. The result is athluxury for the 21st century — and the exact type of sportswear-inspired contemporary wear we’re looking to add to our closets this fall.
